The Region
Why the Berkshires
Great Barrington, Stockbridge and Lenox have become year-round communities rather than summer resorts, with excellent restaurants, independent schools and a strong creative scene.
The land is more varied than anywhere else we work: open valley farmland, wooded hillsides and lakefront, with long views across the Housatonic valley. This is the place for a house that is lived in through every season, and we design for long winters.
Towns
Where we look for land
Great Barrington
A lively Main Street, skiing at Butternut and easy access to the Taconic.
Stockbridge
The quintessential New England village and home of the Norman Rockwell Museum.
Lenox
Tanglewood, Gilded Age “cottages” and the region's cultural heart.
Egremont & Sheffield
Farmland and quieter country near Mount Everett and Bash Bish Falls.
Building Here
What to know before you build
Title 5 septic
Massachusetts regulates septic systems under Title 5, which puts soil testing and system design early in any project.
Conservation commissions
Under the Massachusetts Wetlands Protection Act, work near wetlands, streams and ponds needs local conservation commission approval.
Building for winter
Higher elevations and colder winters call for excellent insulation, efficient heating and careful planning for snow, drainage and access.
Protected land
Groups such as the Berkshire Natural Resources Council protect large areas of the region's hills and forests.
Requirements vary by town and parcel. We confirm them during feasibility, before you commit.
From the City
Getting there
The drive is about two and a half to three hours via the Taconic State Parkway. Amtrak's station in Hudson, New York, is about 45 minutes away by car, and the seasonal Berkshire Flyer runs between New York and Pittsfield on summer weekends.
